Diet

Pellet base with fruit and vegetables. Higher fruit tolerance than most parrots of this size.

Housing

200 × 100 × 160 cm minimum for a pair. Bar spacing 19 mm. They are strong chewers.

Temperament

Affectionate and extremely loud. The call carries several hundred metres and is the single most common reason they are rehomed.

Breeding

Reliable once mature and bonded. Endangered in the wild, so captive-bred stock with proper documentation matters more here than in most species.

Established mutations

Very few established mutations. Red factor and pied birds occur but are not widely fixed.

Watch for

–Noise: genuinely a limiting factor in suburban aviaries
–CITES-listed: documentation is not optional
–Feather plucking in isolated birds
–Obesity on seed-heavy diets

Listed as Endangered by the IUCN. Wild populations have collapsed through trapping, so provenance and closed-ring records carry real weight.
